Google has a way of generating interest in new product launches that I find nearly irresistible and yet rewarding at the same time. They make it known that a “limited” number of invites will become available and ask you to sign up to request one (remember Google Wave?).
When I heard about a new version of Google Maps being in the works, I was ambivalent about jumping in, especially after the Apple’s iPhone Maps dilemma. Then I found out there was an accompanying educational program that included the ability to earn certification in Google Maps and/or Google Earth. Well count me in! In a way it is like rewarding badges or stars for achieving levels in a game, but whatever, some of us need that extrinsic motivation.
So far the most noticeable thing is that Maps and Earth are now integrated. You can switch back and forth easily. Although this appears to be similar to turning on and off the Satellite layer in the old Maps, there are some interesting applications such as zooming out far enough to see current cloud coverage and even further out to see day and night on the planet.
Another new feature is an Explore bar at the bottom of the page. As you search an area Google draws from various sources on the web to provide pictures, street views and other features in this bar. By hovering over an image a line is displayed that indicates the position of that feature on the map. As the name implies it makes exploring fast and visual.

Probably the most interesting feature for marketers working on the “local” angle, is a search result box that appears in the upper left hand corner. This appears to be a pretty finely tuned integration of Places and even has styling similar to the new Google Now features. I think it will be imperative for all business owners to go into Google Places and claim there business, as it is undoubtedly already just sitting there waiting to be claimed.
